The more I think about it though, I think they would have said Rev. Jimmy Carter and I think being THAT religious even in the 70's would make you hard to elect... so without google-ing I'm taking a stab at Monroe or JQ Adams....I'm going to go with Monre.

Dad is correct. The answer is James Garfield.
According to the official White House website, whitehouse.gov, “James Garfield was the only preacher to ever become president. He was an ordained minister who used his speaking ability to preach and teach.”
