Kathleen, you are correct, the answer is an ear of corn.
The final pro-noun is supposed to be a "he". Here is the story, I'm not responsible for it's validity:
Legend has it that an imp lived inside corn kernels, and when his home was heated, he got so upset that he burst.
From this we got popcorn!
yay! that was my strong first instinct but i wasn't sure it fit so I almost dismissed it! Always goes to show ---you should trust your gut! (if it's filled with popcorn or not)
